This article discusses whether global warming is or is not occurring. It specifically addresses how people decide whether or not it is. The article argues that there are two ways to look at the data points marking the temperature changes that have been taking place. Both ways of looking at the data points could be correct but one is not better than the other. The data can either support or negate global warming depending on how it is used.
Since most people know little about global warming or the data points that are being analyzed. They rely heavily on others opinions to make their own opinions about if global warming is or is not occurring. This leaves them vulnerable for following information cascades instead of them making their own informed decision and analyzing the data on their own.
A big part of the information cascade in this particular case is the role that trusted celebrities have in influencing the general public. In this case Al Gore has played a large role with his portrayal of the global warming situation in his documentary An Inconvenient Truth . This type of media coverage stops people from seeing the alternative to the situation. In the classic information cascade model there are two choices from which people choose based on their own information and the observable choices of other. In the case of global warming people do not know there is a second way of viewing the issue. There is also a problem with the fact that most people do not have their own information regarding the topic. This leads people to agree with what they feel is the generally accepted theory. In this case it is the theory that has been popularized by the media and endorsed by celebrities like Al Gore.
