Protest are some kind of information cascade.
Protests always start with a few people organizing themselves on how to go about in their protest. A group of few people start a protest by first thinking of the way their protest will be held. They decide if their protest is going to be violent or if it’s going to be held peacefully.
People decide to protest because something in their institution is not going well, or they are being mistreated by the government or an institution they belong to, sometimes people protest in favor of what is going on in their institution, but most of the time is people protest against the situation in their institutions. By protesting people express their reaction to mistreatment in hope of ending the mistreatment. If people are protesting in favor of what is going on, their protest is intended to show their support for what is going on.
Protester may organize a protest as a way of publicly and forcefully making their opinions heard in order to influence a public opinion or an institution policy, or may undertake direct action to attempt to directly pass desired changes themselves. Self-expression can, in theory, in practice or in appearance, be restricted by governmental policy, economic circumstances, and religious. When such restrictions occur, opposition may spill over into other areas streets.
Protest will recruit more people once people understand the cause of the protest, some people will join the protest because their friends or relatives organized the protest. As more people here about the protest, the decide to join them or reject to join them, whatever the case if the cause of the protest represents a public opinion more people will join them, since they are all affected by the situation. They just don’t want to leave it to one or two people to handle it. Protesters understand that if the government sees a large number of people protesting, they will respond immediately, but if it’s only a few people, the government or their institution wont respond.
Some government or institutions respond by taking their time to listen to the protesters opinions and responding to the protester’s demand, but this is not always the case. Most governments respond by beating the protesters, firing tear gas and increase police on the streets to scatter the protesters. The governments also start by putting a few police to scare the people, but if people don’t go away the governments increase the number of police, until there is enough police to deal with protesters. Some protests don’t end easily however much their governments try to end them.
The pro-independence protest in Tibet have been going on for the past five years, but this year they were intense and end up spreading to other cities that had never carried them out. Protest normally against Chinese rule always took place in Tibetan capital, Lhasa and other large Tibetan cities.
This year’s protest ended up spreading to many places such as the remote areas and isolated monasteries not previously involved in political activities. As the information was broadcasted by international media, the Tibetans who live in exile in India also started protesting in India at the Chinese embassy. As the situation was being covered by the media and broadcasted around the world other people who are not Tibetans showed support by condemning China to stop the mistreatment of Tibetans. Some of the world big figured individuals threatened to boycott the Olympic Games that are due to take place in china, if China didn’t stop mistreating Tibetans.
Protest are form of a cascade of information as people hear that there are a lot of people involved, they will end up joining them, if there are few people involved it’s less likely that they will end up joining or be in support of them. The world responded to Tibetans protest because of the turn up this year.
