The article written few months ago is about the rumor against the president of South Korea during election. As a candidate during election, the president of South Korea, Lee Myung Bak, was criticized by other political opponents by rumor that Lee falsely registered his address for real estate speculation. Criticizing one’s rival candidate is not a rare scene in politics, but since Lee’s victory seemed obvious to many people, the level of criticism was much higher; for Lee’s rivals, there wasn’t a good chance to win, so they focused on criticizing him.
For Lee, it should have been easy to assume what his rival candidates would do. Actually, it was even obvious to people who had little interest in politics. Since his personal scandals seemed like his only weakness, it was easy for him to assume his rivals will focus on his scandals. It seems to me that other candidates knew they are going to lose, because all surveys done by various media showed Lee was supported greatly. However, even if you cannot win, it is essential to get moderate number of votes from candidates. Obviously getting more votes is better than getting less.
In this story, we can find Nash Equilibrium. A Nash equilibrium occurs when each player simultaneously makes his best response to others’ actions. When the participants of a game reach the same conclusion using particular strategies, and all of them are satisfied with the result and have no intention of changing strategies, the condition is called a Nash equilibrium. The logic inside of it is that people logically think what is best for them by assuming what the other party will do. In poker games, stock investments and election strategy, everyone believes only in his own victory. An election is, in some sense, a game. Other parties think about what I think. When I draw up a strategy based on that thought, my rivals will come up with new strategies based on my new thought. That is how election strategies are prepared. When my opponent attracts votes with money, I plan to criticize him by drawing attention to his personal scandal. Even though this strategy did not work to Lee’s rival candidates, but for me it seemes that their strategy was the best strategy they could have used.
