Online social networking sites

The recently new creation, online networking sites, Myspace and Facebook are online networking sites that are of popular demand.  Myspace is directed more towards the middle school and highschool age brackets, whereas Facebook is directed towards college aged individuals.

There are many positive and negative connotations with myspace and other online social networking sites.  Some say that it is a great place to meet people, while others say it is a grounding site for sexual predators or others of that nature.  Depending on the privacy that you have on your “page”  will influence your security.  A more recent site, Facebook is becoming increasingly popular, and this site is more secure, only enabling people in your ‘networks’ to view your site, or you can even set it as ‘friends only’.   Myspace is a popular site to meet people, anyone can send a message to anyone else that they want.  Most of the time you get either spam as messages or comments from people you don’t know saying random things and wanting to meet you.  Facebook has a section of the page where it says looking for: you can choose from friendship, dating, a relationship or networking.

Myspace and facebook are networking sites, they create ties between people.  You have either “strong ties” or “weak ties”, those people that you are close friends with are the strong ties and those people that you just happen to know, are weak ties.  This also relates to the idea of the directed graphs.  There are famous people on myspace, so you can request to be their friends on the site, but as in the examples in class,  they are not going to know you.
