The Epidemic of Mobile Viruses

In class we discussed the spread of epidemics and its relation to networks. This branching process is very similar to the spread of viruses on the Internet, or even the spread of mobile viruses via smartphones. The article “Mobile viruses, a ticking bomb” explores the rising epidemic of mobile viruses. The spread of mobile viruses started with Bluetooth wireless transfers. Bluetooth is just one way a mobile device can be infected. Other virus’ infection mechanisms include WiFi, USB ports, infrared ports, flash memory cards, downloading, and even text or multimedia messages. These connectivity options enable devices to transfer data across multiple platforms and networks. However, this also allows mobile viruses to infect a device. These viruses are extremely harmful and can even permanently damage the device. It will only be a matter of time before the mobile virus epidemic becomes widespread.

This epidemic relates closely to the interaction of nodes in a network. Although the effects are not yet commonly noticed, the spread can intensify very rapidly, similar to the branching process of a disease epidemic. Furthermore, as mobile commerce becomes more and more popular, hackers may develop newer and smarter mobile phone viruses if there is potential financial gain. Fortunately, many attempts are being made to protect users of mobile devices, but increased awareness is needed to control this emerging epidemic.
