For Your Weekend Repository Browsing Pleasure: The “Digital Mirror” at the National Library of Wales

Ithaca, NY The breadth and scope of the National Library of Wales’ collections in arts, literature, and historic objects from Wales’ earliest printed book to historic maps and photographs, Welsh biographies, and Illingworth’s cartoons may be browsed online at the “Digital Mirror.” This site provides an in-depth view into Welsh culture and heritage (http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=122) in both English and Welsh language versions.

The Library’s sound and video offerings (http://www.archif.com/) include a particularly atmospheric recording of Madge Breese singing the Welsh national anthem on March 11, 1899.

“The words and music that were later adopted as our (Welsh) national anthem were composed in January 1856, the result of a collaboration between a father and a son from Pontypridd: Evan James (Ieuan ap Iago, 1809-1878), author of the words, and James James (Iago ap Ieuan, 1833-1902) who composed the melody.”
