More than 1,522 peer-reviewed educational resources were recently added to the BiosciEdNet (BEN)
portal, bringing the total number of items to 8,277. Educators will find a variety of new and effective teaching resources, including lessons, laboratory exercises, journals, multimedia, and online interactive pages. The twenty newest resources are posted here. Two of our most recent contributing BEN Collaborators are:
Science Signaling: The Signal Transduction Knowledge Environment
The 10 new resources brought to the portal by Science Signaling have the same familiar quality and content for which STKE resources are well known. Though STKE changed its name in January 2008 to Science Signaling, the pedagogically sound materials available at the site focus on the topic of cell signaling. Visit BEN to view items known for helping researchers navigate through the world’s interrelated information resources. One resource explains the Hedgehog Signaling Pathway (Hh), which is essential for development and tissue homeostasis in metazoans. When it is corrupted, the Hh pathway results in malformations and diseases such as cancer.
Upper Intertidal Zone
Video and Image Data Access (VIDA) for Science and Inquiry during Teacher Preparation. The VIDA collection contains annotated science video and images with content and language appropriate for K-8 standards-based science. Search through the 199 new resources added by VIDA to find a suitable compliment to hands-on inquiry for your students. VIDA is meant to facilitate sharing the excitement of current research among scientists, science faculty, and teachers through the use of images. For example, the resource Main Zones of the Intertidal Zone shows an area of the Central California coast where the tides rise and fall daily, alternatively submerging and exposing the shore to ocean water. Organisms that live in this zone must be able to tolerate times of intense sunlight, little moisture, and wave forces. The images discuss the important characteristics of each zone and a link to the Strand Map system allows you to relate the resource to state and national educational standards.
